Want to contribute to science? Want to participate in an exciting marine science study? Do you want to catch a big mulloway?
Well, ?Ballina?s Mulloway Classic,? is the event for you.All fishers are invited to participate in this Classic event, for the sake of science.

ECOfishers, with the University of NSW and NSW Fisheries, are promoting this scientific event. It is hosted by the Ballina Fishing Club, from their clubhouse at Canal Rd.

?Ballina?s Mulloway Classic,? will be an annual event for the next three (3) years. It commences on Friday November 9th and runs for one month. It concludes with the presentation and prize giving at the Clubhouse, on Sunday, December 2nd.

Our aim is to catch as many mulloway as possible during the month. The wider the sample of  fish, the better. The 2007 target is mulloway of a minimum length of 100cm (1m)

The Classic will be the only opportunity we have to quantify local anglers, catch and effort.

All mulloway will need to be weighed and measured whole. Fishers may then take the fillets of flesh. The heads, offal and frames are required for scientific examination and research, by the University.

Data gleaned from these examinations will tell us much about the biology, life cycle, dispersal, habits and growth rates of the species. It is an integral part of our mulloway restocking programme.

Log sheets will be provided. Accuracy is essential. It is a scientific study. All log sheet information will be strictly confidential.

So why not make it a family event? Everyone is eligible. You may land the catch of a life time. You get the flesh, the University gets the offal, and science wins.

It will be a great Classic!

Special tip. If fishing the river, work the deepest holes you can find.

FOLKS, fish anytime and as often as you like during the Classic period. (9th November to 2nd December)

Deposit your frames and offal at any of Ballina's Bait and Tackle shops (securely tied in a strong plastic bag together with your confidential log sheet)

Great prizes to be won. Every fisher who competes and completes a log sheet, is eligible to win a MAJOR prize.

ECOfishers aren't fishing for the prizes. They are fishing for science. (But they wouldn't say "no" to some new fishing gear!)  CEO.

MULLOWAY IN TROUBLE - see the ECOfishers general page for the latest update on Mulloway stocks across the state. Now you all know why only fish greater in length than 100cm were targetted in the 2007 Mulloway Classic.
